PREFACE
Since the State, as an
evolving society, has felt a need to settle the
imbalance in male-female equality in all
aspects, the girls’ education has been kept in
focus while preparing this booklet. The GCPE is
implementing agency for Gujarat for various
national, education sector programmes like SSA,
DPEP & NPEGEL that concentrate and promote
girls’ education. For their implementation at
grass-root level, naturally, the prime
requirement was availability of indicative data
for analyzing the current situation. As our
humble efforts to focus on literacy-related
projects, the Census-2001 data served our
purpose adequately, and, as the process of
planning got evolved form it, a rudimentary idea
about this booklet also took some definite
shape.
The booklet provides an
over-view of the female literacy scenario in the
state. District and block-wise data has been
presented in both descending and ascending
orders, which will prove to be very useful in
formulating the strategies to address the
current educational issues.
It is hoped, in the long-run
of the time, it will have strong impact on the
areas of concern, like girls’ education and
women empowerment, etc.
Summing up in a nutshell, the
book-let will be useful to all those whose
efforts are directed towards boosting of the
girls education, i.e. Panchayati Raj
Institutes(PRIs), academicians, educationists,
Community Based Organisations(CBOs) and
functionaries from the Education Department.
The book-let may be utilized
for planning to address the Gender related issue
and women empowerment related activities by all
stake-holders and policy-framers involved in the
educational planning, monitoring and
implementation of various interventions.
Earlier, the same type of
booklet was published with the help of
provisional census data. On the publication of
final data by census, this same booklet is
prepared.
