Achievement
DPEP – Gujarat has witnessed a substantial rise in enrolment from 619756 to 948532 between 1996-97 and 2002-2003. The average GER based on formal schools enrolment in three DPEP districts increased from 73.25 percent to 108.04 percent in Panchmahal 92.63 percent to 114.37 percent in Banaskantha during the same period. However, district Dang started with a GER of 154.62 percent in 1996-97 and steadied with 142.89 in 2002-03 Assuming the contribution of unrecognised schools at 8 – 10 percent, the GER would be around 121 percent. Similarly the net enrolment ratio shows a steady rise in district BK from 84.58 percent to 94.61 percent, in Panchmahal 78.71 percent to 91.05 percent and Dang 131.89 percent to 115.97 percent during 1997-98 and 2002-03. The enrolment is thus near universal.

Retention in DPEP districts during 97-98 was above 90%, which settled above 93% by the year ending 2002-2003. At the beginning, Dangs had a retention of 90.42 percent because there were a large number of out of school children, and with intensive mobilization out of school children were brought back into school along with newly enrolled student. This had resulted in a sharp rise in the retention figure. However, at the end of the Year 2002-2003 it settled down at 86.47%. The main reason behind the decline in enrolment during 2002-03 was migration. See the table given below.
