Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya – KGBV

For whom?

  • Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya scheme is a residential school (5th, 6th and 7th std.) with Boarding facilities at elementary level for girls belonging to SC/ST/ OBC/ Minority and BPL in difficult areas

Parameters

  • The schools are set up in identified Educationally Backward Blocks (EBB)under NPEGEL where

    • the rural female literacy rate is below the national rural female literacy rate

    • the gender gap in literacy is higher than the national gender gap

Component of the KGBV

  • To provide necessary infrastructure for the schools

  • To procure and prepare necessary teaching - learning material and aidsTo put in a place a appropriate system to provide necessary academic support and for evaluation and monitoring

  • To motivate and prepare the out of school girls and their parents to send their daughters to residential schools

  • The emphasis will be on the slightly older girls (10-16 years) who have not been able to complete primary education

  • Difficult areas (migratory, scattered habitations) younger girls can also be targeted

  • Adolescent girls who are unable to go to regular schools

  • Minimum 75% of the enrolment shall be reserved for girls from SC, ST, OBC and minorities

  • The remaining 25% would be accorded to girls from families below poverty line

  • Scheme has been implemented by State Govt. through

    • The Mahila Samakhya in MS districts (Banaskantha, Panchmahal, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Vadodara & Sabarkantha)

    • The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Mission in the remaining districts (Bhavnagar, Amreli, Ahmedabad, Dahod, Patan, Narmada, Kheda,Kutch, Mehsana, Surat, Junagadh & Jamnagar)

Type of Schools

  • Three different unit cost/ models based on the nos. of girls and type of residential schools have been provided

    • 100 girls - Type A (hostel and school)

    • 50 girls - Type B (hostel and school)

    • 50 girls - Type C (only hostel facility)

Criteria to open KGBV

  • These schools are operationalised only in special circumstances

    • No access to school

    • For other reasons can not attend the schools

    • No duplicity with existing schemes of residential schools of various departments

Cost Estimates for 100 girls (Type A)

  • Non Recurring Grant : 26.25 lacs per school
    - Building : 20 lacs
    - Furniture, equipment : 6.25 lacs (including kitchen equipment teaching learning material and library books and bedding)

  • Recurring Grant : 19.05 lacs per school

Cost Estimates for 50 girls (Type B)

  • Non Recurring Grant : 21.25 lacs per school
    - Building : 15.00 lacs
    - Furniture, equipment : 6.25 lacs (including kitchen equipment teaching learning material and library books and bedding)

  • Recurring Grant :12.815 lacs per school

Cost Estimates for 50 girls (Type C)

  • Non Recurring Grant : 21.25 lacs per school
    - Building : 15.00 lacs
    - Furniture, equipment : 6.25 lacs (including kitchen equipment teaching learning material and library books and bedding)

  • Recurring Grant : 9.925 lacs per school

For 2007-08, Rs.1528.791 lacs has been sanctioned

  • Intensive training for the teachers

    • Imparted 35 days training to teachers and more 20 days training will be imparted to all teachers to strengthen their teaching-learning skills by Care India

    • Coastal Blocks: Una, Dwarka, Sutrapada, Mahuva, Kalyanpur,Rajula, Jafarabad

    • Desert Blocks : Bhachau, Rapar, Santalpur, Anjar, Bhuj, Radhanpur

    • Other Blocks : Balva, Dhanera, Tharad, Balasinor, Satlasna, Sami, Vankaner, Chotila, Muli, Sayala, Palitaana, Halvad, Viramgam

    • Border Block: Vav

Activities

  • Life Skills Training

  • Imparted vocational training on making of Shampoo, Soap, Detergent, Embroidery, Stitching, Bamboo work , Jute work, Clay Modeling work, Book Binding, Shell work

  • Taught cycling to all girl students

  • Taught Lathi and Lazim to all girls for the self defense

  • Imparted self-defense training such as Judo-Carate

  • Taught puppet making and handling

  • Three exposure visits of educational places per a year.

  • Intensive project work to improve their writing skill as well as boost up their confidence on various subjects

  • Established library corner and distributed 425 books to all KGBVs (Type A and B)

  • Special activity based gender sensitive reference material prepared for girl students to improve their academic skills with the help of experts of Care India

Monitoring and Supervision

  • Special class observation tools are developed for the intensive supervision and monitoring purpose.

  • Training was imparted on how to supervise and monitor KGBVs effective way to BRCs, CRCs and District Gender Coordinator (Consultant)

  • Consultant District Gender Coordinator visit minimum two KGBVs a month

  • Monthly review is done with the help of Care India and steps are taken accordingly to improve the quality of education

  • Every six months test is given to measure the competency level of teachers,

  • Provided Personal academic support to teachers to improve their academic skills
